A little over a month ago I took a new bunny into my life. Blu is his name, and biting was his game. He was a territorial little guy and did not want anybody to mess with him or his space. I am glad to say that he is now a totally different bunny.
I adopted Blu as a companion for Usagi. They still aren't bonded (I'll let the professionals deal with that) but I am so glad I took him into my life. At first I had my doubts, but he has now proven that he is a worthwhile addition to my life.
I don't know much about his history, but I do know that Blu is a young adult and he came from an animal shelter. From that fact I can make assumptions, but nothing is set in stone. From the little I know I am guessing he was probably an Easter bunny from last year, and probably restrained to a small cage with little or no freedom. As he was an unaltered male and most likely didn't have much human interaction, I can also guess that he most likely bit whoever had him before. I suppose that would have been the last straw for an irresponsible bunny owner, so he ended up in the pound.
If Blu hadn't been rescued by the Bunny Bunch I'd hate to think what would have happened. As he had a slightly aggressive personality, I assume the poor guy would have probably been put down. It saddens me to think that perfectly healthy rabbits like Blu are put down every day because their original owners got sick of them.
I won't lie, Blu has bitten me. He was an aggressive little thing when I got him, but he has calmed down so much in the short time I've had him. I never got mad at him though, I knew he had been through a lot. I just gave him time, patience, and love, and it has paid off so much! I have to admit, I almost returned him, but that was on a totally unrelated matter. Usagi was sick, so I was scared if she was too sick I wouldn't be able to care for both of them. In the end Usagi wasn't too sick, so I was able to keep him. I am so glad I got to keep him!
Anyway, I could really go on all night, but I won't. I am still amazed at how fast his attitude has changed. Blu has shown me that bunnies can forgive and forget their past, it just takes a while. All aggressive bunnies need are love, space, and time. I'm sure some take longer than others to realize that they are safe, but once they do it's a wonderful thing. Nothing is more rewarding than taking a bunny who bites and charges and turning them into one who kisses and constantly wants to be petted.
I just find it sad that whoever originally had Blu will never know what a wonderful little guy he really is. *sigh* They probably never even gave the poor little bunny a chance.
