I have been swishing the idea of a weekly bunny feature around in my head for a while now. I figured what better day to start my "Sunday Bunny Sunday" feature than today, Easter Sunday?
So since today is Easter, the topic of the day is why you shouldn't buy a bunny for Easter. A bunny is an animal deserving of love and devotion just like a dog or a cat. The problem is, most people don't see it that way. Most people see a rabbit the same way they'd see a mouse or similar rodent, low maintenance and cute, but ultimately boring.
Bunnies are very loving animals, under the right circumstances they make wonderful pets. If you buy a bunny without knowing anything about them, they often end up aggressive and/or dead. Rabbits are very emotional animals and demand a lot of attention. They are far from low maintenance.
Easter bunnies are often bought for children, and a child cannot properly care for or handle a rabbit. Once the novelty of the new baby bunny wears off the bunny ends up neglected, released, or at an animal shelter. Do not contribute to this problem by buying a bunny unless you are prepared!
Ask any rabbit rescue about Easter, and they will tell you the same thing, they always end up with a flood of unwanted rabbits a couple of months after Easter.
Animals are not disposable. If you buy a bunny for Easter and then give it away or release it you are just teaching your kids that it's ok to have disregard for life. Is that really a lesson people want to be teaching?
This is a very sensitive subject for me, as I love bunnies. I have a lot more to say about the subject of bunnies, but it'll have to wait. I plan on making this a weekly feature, so hopefully the few people who actually read my crap will learn a thing or two along the way.
Just to reiterate: DON'T BUY A BUNNY ON IMPULSE. EASTER IS NOT FUN FOR THE BUNNIES THAT GET ABANDONED AND DIE EVERY YEAR BECAUSE THE OWNERS WERE TOO LAZY TO PROPERLY CARE FOR THEM!
...*Sigh* poor bunnies...
